The end of the 1980s saw Real Betis immersed in a fight to preserve its status in La Liga. In the 1987/1988 season, the team under the direction of English coach John Mortimore finished in 16th place, just 2 points above the relegation zone. The climax came with a great victory in the Seville derby.
After relegation in the 1988/1989 season, there was an immediate promotion to the top flight, with 22 goals from newcomer Pepe Mel.
