The 1990s were a turbulent time due to financial problems, playing in the Spanish 2nd division. Things began to improve in the 1993-94 season when, under Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, Real Betis finished as runners-up one point behind RCD Espanyol to earn promotion back to the League after a three-year absence. .
This was a team that featured a returning hero, veteran Rafael Gordillo, playing in midfield alongside talented youngster Juan José Cañas. The team also had illustrious youth players such as Merino, Ureña, Cuellar and Márquez. To round off a successful season, Real Betis also reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey after eliminating FC Barcelona.
