Playing under the name Betis Balompié with royal sponsorship canceled until after the Spanish Civil War, the 1934/1935 season was historic for the club, as the first La Liga title was won.

The team was coached by Irishman Patrick O'Connell and its star player was Spanish international Simon Lecue, an attacking midfielder who scored 9 goals in 21 games this season. The championship was won thanks to a firm defense and was finally secured on April 28, 1935 with a 5-0 victory against Racing de Santander.
